The owners of research and survey vessel Tangaroa were so pleased with work the Whangarei consortium has done on the $70 million vessel they significantly expanded the original contract from $1.3 million to approximately $2 million. The original contract was completed ahead of schedule and on budget allowing the additional work to be completed. The project was the first of three stages in a $20 million upgrade of the vessel, due for completion by the end of 2010, and involved structural modification and relocation of equipment. Whangarei Engineering Company Limited, Ship Repair NZ Ltd, Circa Marine & Industrial and McRaes Engineering Limited put in a joint bid for the contract and will also tender for the other two stages. These include installation and commissioning of a dynamic positioning system, which will enable Tangaroa to keep a fixed position. Whangarei Engineering Company Limited co-ordinated the tendering process and project managed the contract on behalf of the Joint Venture Partners.
